Starting over isn't easy, especially for small-town guy John Nolan who, after a life-altering incident, is pursuing his dream of being an LAPD officer. As the force's oldest rookie, he’s met with skepticism from some higher-ups who see him as just a walking midlife crisis.

Cast & Chracters

John Nolan
John Nolan, portrayed by Nathan Fillion, is the oldest rookie at the Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD), assigned to the Mid-Wilshire Division. After studying at Pennsylvania State University, he dropped out to start a construction business upon learning his girlfriend, later wife, was pregnant. At 45, Nolan closed his construction company in Pennsylvania and, after thwarting a bank robbery in his hometown of Foxburg, moved to Los Angeles to become a police officer. He is divorced with a son named Henry. In later seasons, Nolan becomes a training officer, aiming to mentor new recruits and enact positive changes within the LAPD. He marries Bailey Nune in the sixth season.

Lucy Chen
Lucy Chen, played by Melissa O'Neil, is an ambitious 29-year-old rookie officer partnered with Training Officer Tim Bradford. Despite her parents' disapproval—both psychologists who view her career choice as rebellious—Chen is determined to succeed in law enforcement. She later qualifies as an undercover officer and begins a romantic relationship with Bradford. Over time, she advances to become a temporary training officer and eventually a sergeant.

Angela Lopez
Angela Lopez, portrayed by Alyssa Diaz, is an LAPD detective who initially serves as the training officer for rookie Jackson West. Raised alongside four brothers by a single mother, Lopez exhibits a competitive streak and aspires to become a detective. She marries defense attorney Wesley Evers, and together they have two children. Balancing her professional ambitions with motherhood, Lopez becomes an inspiring figure within the department.

Tim Bradford
Tim Bradford, played by Eric Winter, is a strict and no-nonsense training officer assigned to Lucy Chen. A former Army staff sergeant and squad leader with service in Iraq and Afghanistan, Bradford brings a disciplined approach to his role. Despite his tough exterior, he is fair and deeply committed to his trainees' success. Bradford eventually transitions to the elite Metro Division and enters into a romantic relationship with Chen, though they later part ways due to personal challenges.

Nyla Harper
Nyla Harper, portrayed by Mekia Cox, is an experienced detective who returns to patrol work as a training officer after four years undercover. She becomes John Nolan's second training officer, bringing a tough and seasoned perspective to his development. Harper later marries James Murray and gives birth to a daughter named Leah. She returns to detective work, partnering with Angela Lopez, and continues to be a formidable presence within the department.

Wade Grey
Sergeant Wade Grey, played by Richard T. Jones, is the watch commander at the Mid-Wilshire Station. A veteran of the Armed Forces, Grey initially views John Nolan's midlife career change with skepticism, suspecting it to be a crisis-driven decision. However, over time, he recognizes Nolan's capabilities and dedication, becoming a supportive mentor. Grey is known for his tough but fair leadership style, deeply caring for his officers' well-being and professional growth.

Wesley Evers
Wesley Evers, portrayed by Shawn Ashmore, is a defense attorney who initially clashes with Angela Lopez but later becomes her husband. Renouncing his trust fund to serve as a public defender, Evers is principled and dedicated to justice. He provides legal counsel to many officers and is known for his commitment to holding law enforcement accountable. Together with Lopez, he navigates the challenges of balancing their demanding careers and family life.

Bailey Nune
Bailey Nune, played by Jenna Dewan, is a firefighter with the Los Angeles Fire Department. She is also a reserve in the Army National Guard and teaches capoeira, a dance-fighting discipline. Nune has a complex past, including an emotionally abusive relationship with her ex-husband, Jason Wyler, who attempted to sabotage her life and career. Over time, she develops a romantic relationship with John Nolan, and they marry in the sixth season.

Celina Juarez
Celina Juarez, portrayed by Lisseth Chavez, is a high-achieving recruit who graduated at the top of her police academy class. She has a strong belief in the spiritual, stemming from a childhood experience where a psychic helped locate her kidnapped younger sister. This belief influences her reliance on intuition in her police work. Juarez becomes John Nolan's first probationary trainee after he becomes a training officer, bringing a unique perspective to the force.
