Introduced in the pilot episode as a runaway bride, Rachel reconnects with her childhood friend Monica Geller and becomes part of a close-knit group in New York City. Initially depicted as a spoiled 'daddy's girl,' she embarks on a journey toward independence, starting with a job as a waitress at Central Perk. Over the series, Rachel evolves into a successful businesswoman in the fashion industry. Her on-again, off-again romantic relationship with Ross Geller, Monica's brother, is a recurring theme throughout the show. Together, they have a daughter named Emma. Her romantic relationships include a significant one with Richard Burke, an older family friend, and later, she develops a deep relationship with Chandler Bing, whom she marries. Monica's character is also marked by her struggle with weight during her youth, which influences her personality and relationships.

Despite her hardships, she maintains a positive and whimsical outlook on life. Phoebe's musical performances at Central Perk, especially her song 'Smelly Cat,' are a recurring element in the series.
